All last week we discussed the INTENTIONAL pursuit of EXCELLENCE.
The key point is that if you do not ACTIVELY REJECT mediocrity, you are unwittingly choosing it over excellence—and will be traveling down a road littered with broken dreams and failed expectations.
This week, we will be getting VERY personal... asking the truly IMPORTANT questions: Are you actually LIVING what you say you value, or are you consumed by the moment... with no forward movement in the direction of your dreams?
The importance of knowing what you value more than something else is critical to your day-to-day performance. Because until you know what's MOST important, you are spending the only life you have on things that simply don't matter.
Knowing what you truly value, and how to put more of it into your life, gives you direction and purpose.
Remain confused and conflicted, and you will never attain the success you desire.
Why? Because without clear values for each of your major roles, it is impossible to develop the necessary sense of MISSION, PASSION and PURPOSE. Without a strong sense of MISSION, it is impossible to create mission-centric GOALS. Without mission-centric goals, it is impossible to develop the PLANS necessary to achieve your mission.
Without rock-solid plans, your mission will be nothing more than a framed statement hanging on your wall.
(If you are not on track to achieve your top 3 goals for the year, I highly recommend that you take 2 minutes to do the above Mission, Goals and Plans TQ Tests again. Score less than 7 on any of the three, and you have just found a major hole in your performance... a gaping pothole on your road to success!)
Success: It's a matter of VALUE.
So, are you spending the ONLY life you have to live on things that simply don't matter? Please take some time today to think about what your values mean to you, and create a short list of what you believe your top 5 personal values are.

No question, living this list of values... making sure that every day you are alive, you put these values into play, means living your BEST life ever.
As you know, arriving at your Top 10 Personal Values from our Mission Workshop can take anywhere from a few hours... to several months to get down to the short list of 10.
When you do, you have found your Authentic Self... what you value... and the initial connection to actually LIVING your Purpose.

How do i live it! well my I'm always here before i'm suppose to I don't cry if i have to stay a little late however if something was planned i will not stay let i let my expitations known, I do my work and act happy about it or at least full of energy! I don't grip about to much well it's normal to grip a little to trust worthy co workers,I feel like this is my radio station and i put forth the work that says it is! that and I love my job!
First we test to see what values are ours: its this and not that its more like this over here. Yeah, that feels better! This is the right jacket style, color, cut and buttons.
Then there is putting together our own "Values Recipe." Like any recipe its not just the ingredients that matter, it is also the order that makes the souffl￩. Now, its the right jacket style, color, cut, buttons and SIZE. Perfect fit!
This is what Dennis (comment above) is talking about when he writes about having peace of mind.
Our values are the content, the order (our Values Recipe) becomes the context, and living those values become the construct of our lives. It becomes the very Who I am.
That's a false belief! For example, I can channel my creativity, intellectual pursuits --my entreprenurial strengths -- into financial rewards.
I am now self-employed and the review of my mission and my values keeps me motivated!
Your VALUES are the hidden, internal motivators in life. When you are living your values, there is no need for external motivation -- it is there naturally.
When you are NOT living what you value most, the carrot and the stick provides sparse motivation at best.
I am happy you listed your values. It gives you a simple, yet highly specific method to determine if you are heading in the right direction.
If you live your values each day, you are going in the right direction.
If not, you're not. Discover your hidden motivators (values) and you will have taken the first step towards living your dreams!

I find that overcoming my selfish desires is not about MY great vision, super efforts and planning to get it right. These lead to a sense of self-rightuosness, and reinforce a belief that I have within me the strength to accomplish my dreams on my own.
That I live according to your values, adn your vision is the most important thing. To understand them and live accordingly, I know I must daily submit my ambition to you, and try to die to anything selfish. I surrender, recognizing there is no value outside your purposes, and I fully admit my inability to do anything of value in my own strength. But in my lack of faith, I often return to grinding it out on my own. This is my struggle. Help me Oh Lord.
But you may be thinking that Vision is all yours or His. The truth is that the vision He placed in your heart and head... the Values He wants you to live are BOTH, yours and His.
You owe it to yourself to be absolutely clear on both points.
If you often do what you hate, you are serving no one... not you... not the good Lord.. no one.
If you are "grinding" it out... struggling to live the life you BELIEVE is yours, then you must accept responsibility for both the choices you make and the actions you take.
Life is NOT supposed to be an endurance test... it is to be lived in service to others... on the highest plain possible.
This means becoming a Success On Purpose... living a purpose-driven life by Performing on Purpose.
What the Lord is telling you is this... "I gave you a purpose... I fully expect... no COMMAND you to live it... up to your full potential... potential that I put there -- right down to your DNA -- at birth.
If you, or anybody else finds themselves struggling through life, maybe you should remember that even the Amish believe that "working prayers have a much better chance of being answered than waiting prayers."
I just completed the final draft of Success On Purpose and sent it off to my dear friend Rick Warren for his comments and edits.
In his book, The Purpose Driven Life, Rick makes the point that we are all here for a purpose... that we all have a God-inspired Mission. See the 5th Purpose.)
The key is to not spend the ONLY life you have to live on things that simply don't matter. You HAVE to live what you vlaue most.
You will, in fact, discover your Mission in life at the intersection of your Values, Visions and Roles. See Chapter 7, My Purpose, My Life for HOW to do this.

right now at this moment,yes I believe I am living my values,though not as consistently as I would like.so I made a new plan.
i do specific tasks on specific days and that this week has worked well.
the only thing i am not good with is the housework,my next mission is to fit that in,and more craft time with the boys too.'

The shutting down of sincerely expressed thoughts and feelings through cynicism and sarcasm is a strange and unexpected position for any of us to take who come to learn how to improve our lives and make the most of ourselves and the time we have to live.
Isn't to do such a thing saying we already "know it all" and therefore have the right to shut down those who, as we see it, do not "know it all" and are therefore somehow lesser and now must be taken to task?
This contradiction of being a student and shutting other students down, to me, seems to be an impossible contradiction.
It is not important that I understand another's faith or another's cynicism or another's grabbling to find the courage to take the next right positive action. It is important that I respect the other person in their genuine attempts to make the most of themselves and their lives no matter the path from which they have come, and the expression of that struggle and the successes that will come.
After all, truly and honestly, none of us knows it all. If we did, it is likely we would not be here looking and learning for something more.
All improvement, business... personal... spiritual... family... has to start with an open mind, and progress towards understanding, not repression.
This week's commentary on VALUES is a fabulous starting point for people to examine their motives, drivers and purpose in life.
If someone is to live ther BEST life ever, it is of vital importance to carefully define exactly what that means to him or her. If they believe that God has directed them to do something, the only point I can make as a performance expert is to GET ON IT!
It is nuts to keep God waiting on hold, while you try to figure out what to do. If you believe you were put here for a Mission, then the performance expert in me would advise... GET ON IT.
If you believe that He put the wrong values in your heart, maybe you need to question that assumption, because as I see it, He doesn't make those kinds of mistakes.
Either way, the issue comes down to PERFORMANCE, not theology. You either Perform on Purpose, or you don't.
As Kent and I frequently say, "You have a choice. Free will. You can become old and successful... or old and cynical."
If the Good Lord put you for a Purpose, then I suggest you discover it... and LIVE it with all your heart and soul.
As a good Christian, I don't think He would take kindly to dissing on one another. As I remember it, he COMMANDED you and I to LOVE one another.
Again, the performance expert in me would simply say, GET ON IT! Make it so... Just DO it.
If you find a better, more specific way to define what LIVING your best life each day means, I would love to hear it. We have, quite literally, thousands of Pastors, Ministers, Rabbi's, Priests, etc. within TQ, and virtually ALL have agreed with my non-theological idea that we all have a COMMON purpose...
Live the LAW...
Do it with LOVE...
If you believe in the first 5 books of the Old Testament, (The Torah) you believe in the LAW -- the 10 Commandments... not the 10 good ideas.
If you believe in the New Testament, you believe in the power of LOVE. Again, this is not just a "great idea", but a directive from Christ himself in John 15:17
"These things I COMMAND you, that you LOVE one another."
As a performance expert, sounds like brilliant advice. This is what He wants us to do, so again I say...
Get On It!
In the end, it is not a scriptural issue. If this is His Expectation, then you might want to take this as something more than an idea that you need to think about. How about just living it.
Which, as I said, means living your Authentic Values.
Maikel is 100% right. There is no room for dissing on anyone here in this discussion.
It shows a lack of class, a lack of understanding, and most of all, a lack of love.
Let's debate ideas for excellence, not political or theological ideologies.
2. To remember that His word also compels me to plan, holding loosely the outcome. His concern is not so much that I get what I want, but to accomplish his purposes for the world. "A man plans his steps, but the Lord directs his path." So planning and acting on faith is good. Plotting the plan so detailed that I cannot be redirected by His prompting is selfish.
3. To constantly pursue love of others from a pure heart.
4. Family Connectedness. When I die, what will matter most is whether I have lived and passed life's most important lessons and values in my own family. This can only be done in the context of much time spent together.
5. That I am blessed is not to be understood as simply a gift to me. It is a gift meant to be passed to others.

I can't believe I am saying this. I, too, have an issue with money. Mine is just the opposite of yours. I have put my values ahead of wealth and I am not able to support my family. It should be that if you focus on your values the money will come. All I want is a job where I can contribute as much as the company will contribute to me. I really don't want to discourage you. I am glad that you found out where your real values lie. I was watching tv today and the man was dying and he held his grandchild. Nothing but his family mattered! But when they were trying to find the surgery to save him, of course you need money to pay for the surgery. This is reality and it seriously SUCKS! I have a client that is dying and I try to help her but it is hurting me and my family. So what do I do? At first I liked helping out, now she expects it. I now feel like it is an obligation
and I don't have the finances or the time to keep this up. The verse says "Do not worry about what you eat or drink or wear. God knows you need these things...and so far this has been true (only because my parents help) but I don't know how much longer we will be able to keep paying the rent. So truthfully, I can't answer your question, but I hope you are correct.
Thanks for your message. It appears God has helped, he's just used your parents as a vehicle. As for issue at hand, after talking with ER on the phone, just by chance one day, I became instantly convinced that TQ Today is the most effective and comprehensive self-help, goal-reaching program out there. And I know, I have spent more money than my husband ever knows of on all sorts of "programs" that profess they will help me finally "get it" and make money and be happy. Hogwash. Not that I haven't learned a bit here and there, but his program, as I see it so far (and I'm still new) seems to be the real kick in the but I need. So, I suggest you follow the program, do the workshops and all that, and see if things just don't start falling into place. I am seeing interesting shift nearly everyday.

Thanks for answering my post. I am convinced this site is the best site in the world. I have learned so much. I think its a problem of not giving up. And all the tools in the world doesn't always mean that you are able to use them all at once. You can only use one at a time and that isn't fast enough. I don't own the program (would love it) but I use the site so perhaps if I had the program things would move faster but as I have shared, no money. I also have a problem of being slower because there are things that I don't want to do. I would imagine thats because they really aren't important to me. I let everyone else make my life the way they want it, not the way it should be...the way God wants it. I'm just not sure what kind of life that is yet. Then you have the issue of having the courage to say NO to the rest. But i'm not going to give up.
There are more than one value and there isn't a world of difference between them so it is hard to say the most important.

I desire to always have the ability to help Rick, Geoff and their families in the event of a financial crisis that they could experience.
I desire to keep what we have in retirement in the account and to add to it periodically.
I desire to make it a commitment to pay taxes quarterly so we are not overwhelmed annually with them.

Though finances are #4. The first three rely on finances to be able to function. What does that mean??? that money is really my top value??/ I don't want to think that. My family is the most important thing to me but without adequate financing, I can't support them.

Attitude is the number one value and to live it everyday, when others see and hear a positive attitude that will encourage others to want to change their own attitude at work and in personal life.
US approval is my #1 goal for my company.
One of my goals that can be advanced by sharing it is my organic garden container beds. I have a friend helping me who is building me all the raised beds I want since I have a disability that makes it otherwise difficult to do gardening of any kind.
Others who will commit and benefit from organic gardening includes my mother and several of my friends.
Those who are on my side and don't know it yet include my daughter and her oldest child, my son, and my youngest brother and his daughter. To make them part of my
peace,self respect,self control,inner calm

Creating a wholesome, spiritual, organized, warm family life.

Lord it is my desire to experience the abundance of your kingdom on this earth.

Then, I would say, indignantly, "Do you know what time it is?" and hang up on Him!
Then, I would run back into the bedroom and start packing a bag, and when my wife asked me, "Where are you going at this hour??" and would reply, "I'm taking the Express train to Hell, honey, and I'll say hello to the rest of your family when I get there!"
Or, I could just recite my list of values which I have done, thanks to the TQ program! They happen to be: Love, Well-Being, Family, Humor, Creativity, Knowledge, Fun, Intelligence, Relaxation and Spirituality; quite a nice list, wouldn't you agree! I have them hanging from underneath my computer monitor so that I must view them every single day. While I can't say that I am at a point where I am living them, they do change the course of my day's events occasionally, so that I get out from behind my desk and go grab my wife and/or kids and we all take the dog for a walk around our beautiful neighborhood, and I get to remember why I am working so hard in the first place! ..........................Marc B. I am convinced that it is the other way around, though it's wonderful to "catch the glimpses" of our results attained through our honorable, loving, "spiritful", mindful, soulful, thoughtful and meaningful deeds and actions.
Many times I do not immediately "see" the results of my actions based on my VVR=missions, and were I not LIVING my core values, the greatest of which IS LOVE, I could become easily confused and conflicted forging through the daily "grind" and "rat race" as it were.
To me freedom, joy, health, wealth, happiness, satisfaction, joy and significance are all bi-products of LOVE well lived.
BEAUTY is my second top value, because I am in total awe of God's amazing creations (seen and unseen) and THEY inspire me to KEEP THE FAITH. Beauty is ALL of God's examples, the "blossom" that communicates to me that there IS A GREATER PURPOSE to aspire to, to create for, to contribute to....
That leads me to GRATITUDE for all HIS gifts that keep me ON PURPOSE, HIS and mine, and they ARE in sync. Thanks be to HIM.
Now, today, in this very moment, I live HERE on earth "together" with all of God's creatures and creations, and the key value then becomes RELATIONSHIPS. First with HIM and in honor, respect and appreciation of HIM~our creator~a real spiritual blessing. "BEING" GOD REALIZED. WOW! It doesn't get any better than this! or does it???!!!???

It is the good and the greatness and the LOVE ~the "immense potential" that I SEE , "whoops" or can we not see this... :)" ...THAT I SEE and CHOOSE to focus on, in relationships which leads to endless possibilities. The more relationships that I build embraces the immense diversity (different relationships, difference people, viewpoints, animals, plants, ideas, you name it) that we are so generously offered and thus DIVERSITY becomes my next key value.
DIVERSITY enriches me, teaches me, frees me (I love to learn, grow, develop, master, contribute my best) expands my perspective, paradigms, potential; keeps me open~minded, alert, flexible, responsive, ...you name it.
It stirs my creative juices to come up with the optimal of compositions (music and other mediums) , creations, solutions to overcome any challenges that are presented to me. I love to learn and diversity helps me learn faster. It expedites and exponentiates the process. It helps me help others in every great way, but before I do...I need a challenge. So CHALLENGE becomes my next value.
CHALLENGE (complex or otherwise) I embrace, and look at it as a positive thing, as it tests me constantly, to come up with creative solutions to simple or complex problems or initiatives; to BEST help me help others that come onto or into my path. Challenge triggers my curiosity. I need to discover what the BEST WAY is to serve my maker, others and myself. Thus curiosity/discovery becomes my next value.
CURIOSITY/DISCOVERY trigger my creative juices to solve the challenges on hand and/or life long challenges, efficiently and effectively, (as we all know and understand that our Time here IS of essence) creating the best possible solutions for all, that serve my maker and his creations not the least of which is you and I.
Finding out what the challenges are, what the people need, what "heaven" on earth needs, what the planet needs and the discovery of what is actually needed, leads to a creative BEST outcome. So creativity is my next value and it is also a true blessing!

Thus SERVICE/CONTRIBUTION are my 9th value. It is not so much 9th as in level of priority, it is simply in a logistical sense. THE TRUTH IS that I LIVE, BREATHE and ACT on ALL my values. They ALL define ME, they ARE WHO I am, and define WHAT I AM going to contribute, and the greatest of these IS LOVE, but without service and contribution, how would I define love or manifest LOVE. :)
WELL. there is one more VALUE that encompasses ALL and that would be integrity.
INTEGRITY serves God, others and myself in as much as I am giving OF and to them ~MY TRUE SELF, as I was designed, by SOMEONE who does know what HE is doing. TRUST ME! THANK HIM! Integrity SERVES as a reminder to BE who I am and TO BE TRUE to who I am because that way EVERYONE will CLEARLY SEE WHO I am, and HOW I may be of GREAT SERVICE to them. They will TRUST that I am the right person for them to be engaging with,or not (which is also a blessing in disguise:) and that will help me CREATE AND DO GREAT WORK, GIVE and PROVIDE GREAT SERVICE, CREATE FOSTER, BUILD, DEVELOP AND NURTURE GREAT LASTING RELATIONSHIPS and ...YOU GET THE PICTURE...

I am convinced that it is the other way around, though it's wonderful to "catch the glimpses" of our results attained through our honorable, loving, "spiritful", mindful, soulful, thoughtful and meaningful deeds and actions.
Many times I do not immediately "see" the results of my actions based on my VVR=missions, and were I not LIVING my core values, the greatest of which IS LOVE, I could become easily confused and conflicted forging through the daily "grind" and "rat race" as it were.
To me freedom, joy, health, wealth, happiness, satisfaction, joy and significance are all bi-products of LOVE well lived.
BEAUTY is my second top value, because I am in total awe of God's amazing creations (seen and unseen) and THEY inspire me to KEEP THE FAITH. Beauty is ALL of God's examples, the "blossom" that communicates to me that there IS A GREATER PURPOSE to aspire to, to create for, to contribute to....
That leads me to GRATITUDE for all HIS gifts that keep me ON PURPOSE, HIS and mine, and they ARE in sync. Thanks be to HIM.
